Fortress CloudsPaul Roub, Product Manager Fortress 1.1 introduced a number of new features over 1.0, in addition to the performance enhancements and bug fixes that come with any .1 release. One feature that we find particularly useful is Fortress’s “tag clouds”. Actually, that’s a misnomer — while we do offer selectable “clouds” based your Work Items’ tags, the same clouds can be applied to all sorts of Work Item data — from milestones and statuses to reports, assignees, and more. So what is a cloud, exactly? It’s a list of all the values available for a particular field — with the most-common values made obvious by a larger font size, with less-common values rendered smaller. These can be very handy when creating Work Items — you have a quick way to insert commonly-used tags, etc. without worrying about mistyping them, or hunting for the same tags everyone else is using. But the tags really shine when searching — instead of hitting every field on Fortress’s Query Items page, inserting just the values you want on the first try, you can take a simple query like “My Open” and refine it as you go. Once you have a basic list of Work Items, you can filter it to only include certain statuses, types, etc. — and at each stage you only see the values that make sense in the current list. So you never end up searching for bugs marked as “Disregard” within a list that doesn’t have any of those. And once you’ve found the search criteria you really want, you can save that query for future use. Frankly, this is much easier to show than to explain.
