Sending out an SOS (Survey)Jeff Clausius, Lead Engineer A favorite adage of mine claims the only constant in life is change itself. This certainly holds true in the case of SourceOffSite. Late last year, SourceGear issued a SourceOffSite (SOS) customer survey whose purpose was to gather information about features for a planned SourceOffSite 5.0. We want to be certain SOS is meeting your expectations today, as well as looking at ways to ensure SOS meets your needs tomorrow. The survey results were interesting to say the least. Almost 40% of the respondents are still planning to use Visual SourceSafe (VSS) indefinitely, and another 18% will still be using VSS into 2010. So VSS will be ruling the version control tools offered by Microsoft for the foreseeable future. In regards to future improvements, there were no surprises. The first three feature requests were for Performance, Performance, and more Performance. Requests included faster times for start up within Visual Studio, faster retrieval of file lists and project trees within the GUI client, as well as faster GET times on file retrievals. In addition, a wide number of respondents asked for stronger logging/debugging support for the network transport layer, including a feature that allows the SOS client to handle lost connections to the SOS Server. So what do you, my fair reader, have to say? If by chance you are reading this, and did not take part in the SourceOffSite survey, I’d be interested in hearing from you. What do you love about SOS? What areas do you hate or would like to see improved in SOS 5.0? Even if you did respond to the survey and just want to say hello, I’d love to hear from you.
