Veracity 0.9.0 Release - Now with installers!

I'm happy to announce the release of Veracity 0.9.0 today, which for the first time includes installers!

Next week, Veracity will have been self-hosting for one full year. We began dogfooding Veracity on May 24th, 2010. We think it's gotten pretty decent, and we're ready to extend its audience beyond the people willing to build it themselves from source.

The following installers are available from http://sourcegear.com/veracity/downloads.html:

  • Windows msi:
    • 32-bit installers support XP and later
    • 64-bit installers support Vista and later
    • non-privileged installers: current Windows user only, no administrative rights required
  • Linux deb packages supporting Ubuntu 10.04 and later (32 and 64-bit)
  • Intel Mac universal dmg (32 or 64-bit)

As before, the source tarball is also there.

Note that on Windows, the Tortoise client is still a work in progress and therefore isn't installed. If you're building veracity from source, however, the Tortoise client is in there.

Changes we've made since the 0.7.0 release last month include:

  • The server can be put in a read-only mode
  • Several server stability bug fixes
  • Lots of bug fixes in the command-line interface
  • Lots of bug fixes in the web interface
  • Overhaul of vv branch syntax. Type "vv help branch" for details.
  • Added branch and file history filters to web interface
  • Tortoise client has a functional history dialog

Previous users of Veracity should also be aware that branches changed significantly. Branches created with an 0.7.0 build won't be visible with an 0.9.0 binary. If you want to keep them, make a note of them before upgrading and re-add them with "vv branch add-head". As noted above, "vv branch help" gives full detail on the new branch syntax.

There was some debate among the team as to whether we should call this a public beta. The software is beta quality: there are no known serious bugs, but we still have some tinkering to do. And it's not quite feature complete. With a little luck (and lots of hard work) next month's release will be feature complete. At that point it will unequivocally be a public beta.

This is a big milestone for the team here at SourceGear. Let us know what you think!

Vault 6 Feature Outline

Development of the next major release of Vault is well underway. Vault 6.0 will include many exciting features that have been requested by our customers. Here are a few of the more noteworthy features that are tentatively planned.

Vault Professional / Standard

  • Content Search - Quickly find text in your repository.

  • Event Notifications - In addition to Email Notifications already in the product, Vault 6.0 will display updates to the source control repository and work items directly within Visual Studio, Eclipse, and the stand-alone GUI client. Developers will be kept informed in real-time of changes made by their team without having to leave their development environment.

  • Expanded IDE integration - Robust improvements to the Vault Classic Client will allow integration into more IDEs, particularly SQL Server Management Studio.

Vault Professional (Work Items)

  • Time Tracking - Users and Managers will be able to track actual (billable/non-billable) time spent on any particular work item.

  • Improved Work Item Audit trail - Quickly see differences in the audit trail for changes made to the description of any work item during work cycles.

We have tentatively set a Beta release for the Summer of 2011. Stay tuned for more details - We'll post them here as the development of Vault 6 proceeds and nears completion.

Goodbye Fortress – Hello Vault Professional Edition!

SourceGear is proud to announce that Fortress 2.0 is now Vault Professional Edition 5.1. More than just a name change, this new release is an exciting upgrade to Fortress 2.0, including integration with Axosoft OnTime, the award winning project management and bug tracking software. Simultaneous with this change, we have renamed SourceGear Vault to SourceGear Vault Standard Edition. Best of all, we’ve dropped the price on Vault Professional (Fortress) from $599 to just $449/user!

Okay.  Explain that Again?

Gladly!  We’ve changed the name of Fortress to “Vault Professional Edition.”  At the same time, we’ve changed Vault to “Vault Standard Edition.”

Both of these changes are in conjunction with an exciting new release.  The latest version of Vault Pro (the software formerly known as Fortress) is now 5.1; likewise the latest version of Vault Standard is now 5.1.

Both new releases are free upgrades to existing Fortress 2.0 or Vault 5.0 users, or users of earlier versions with current maintenance.

Sweet. What about the new pricing?

The retail price of Vault Professional Edition 5.1 is $449/user – that’s $150 less than Fortress 2.0.

The retail price of Vault Standard 5.1 is now $349/user.

What’s different about Vault Pro 5.1 & Vault Standard 5.1?

Vault Professional 5.1 now offers users more choice in integrated Work Item Tracking solutions.  Vault Pro includes integration with Axosoft OnTime defects.  It also ships with a tightly-integrated, complete Work Item Tracking solution from SourceGear – the original Fortress Bug Tracking solution -- which will continue to be fully supported and developed by SourceGear.

Vault Pro 5.1 and  Vault Standard 5.1 also have several bug fixes, additional polish, and the many minor enhancements customers have come to expect from SourceGear’s point releases.

Why the change? I liked Fortress the way it was.

So did we.  But we believe this change will make it clear that Vault Standard and Vault Professional are part of the same family, and both built on the same rock-solid Version Control technology.

We also believe the Vault Professional name will help communicate that the product offers enhancements that can make your life a lot easier -- including always knowing what Work Item a checkin relates to (and vice-versa), the ability to create and save custom queries, integration with CruiseControl.NET to provide continuous integration and build support, and a lot more.

With the price change, we’re trying to make it easier for customers to make the move to Vault Pro, and take advantage of the many efficiencies that come with integrated Work Item tracking and Build Integration.

Finally, we’re also tremendously excited to be partnering with Axosoft.  We think their Project Management Solution is cool, and so do their thousands of customers.

Do you have any Fortress t-shirts left? Those have to be collector’s items!

Not in your size. Sorry.

SourceGear announces Veracity

The next step in Distributed Version Control Systems

SourceGear announced today at O'Reilly OSCON a new open source project, SourceGear Veracity.” Veracity is a new breed of DVCS (distributed version control system), similar in concept to Mercurial and Git, but more ambitious.

In addition to full-featured version control, Veracity offers a number of features intended to demonstrate the benefits of distributed version control to larger corporate environments and Windows developers, including:

A Decentralized Database

Unlike existing DVCS tools, Veracity includes a decentralized database, which can be used for most types of Application Lifecycle Management data. Database changesets can be pushed, pulled and merged in the same manner as source code changesets. The current implementation makes use of this database for tags, comments, bug tracking and user accounts.

Pluggable Storage Layers

Veracity features pluggable storage layers, allowing end-users more flexibility in the way data is managed at a basic level. For example, Veracity will allow the repository to be stored in an enterprise database like Oracle on the server, while developers on the desktop can use something lighter.

Unparalleled Integration

From the very beginning, Veracity was designed to provide excellent integration into a wide variety of existing systems. The entire project provides first-class support for a variety of platforms, including Mac, Linux and Windows. The current set of APIs includes C, JavaScript and REST.

Eric Sink, founder of SourceGear, commented, “Blah, blah, blah. Nobody takes these quotes seriously anyway. If anybody wants to know what I think about Veracity or DVCS, just tell them to read my blog.”

Veracity is not yet ready for widespread usage. The source code (in C and Javascript) for Veracity 0.3 has been made available as open source under the Apache License v2 at www.sourcegear.com/veracity.
