What Happened to Fortress?

Goodbye Fortress – Hello Vault Professional Edition!

SourceGear is proud to announce that Fortress 2.0 is now Vault Professional Edition 5.1. More than just a name change, this new release is an exciting upgrade to Fortress 2.0, including integration with Axosoft OnTime, the award winning project management and bug tracking software. Simultaneous with this change, we have renamed SourceGear Vault to SourceGear Vault Standard Edition. Best of all, we’ve dropped the price on Vault Professional (Fortress) from $599 to just $449/user!

Okay. Explain that Again?

Gladly! We’ve changed the name of Fortress to “Vault Professional Edition.”  At the same time, we’ve changed Vault to “Vault Standard Edition.”

Both of these changes are in conjunction with an exciting new release.  The latest version of Vault Pro (the software formerly known as Fortress) is now 5.1; likewise the latest version of Vault Standard is now 5.1.

Both new releases are free upgrades to existing Fortress 2.0 or Vault 5.0 users, or users of earlier versions with current maintenance.

Sweet. What about the new pricing?

The retail price of Vault Professional Edition 5.1 is $449/user – that’s $150 less than Fortress 2.0.

The retail price of Vault Standard 5.1 is now $349/user.

Is the upgrade free?

If your Fortress license keys are current (meaning they are 2.0 or later) or if your annual maintenance is up-to-date, the upgrade is free. To find out if you are eligible, please log into the SourceGear Customer Service Portal.

What’s different about Vault Pro 5.1 & Vault Standard 5.1?

Vault Professional 5.1 now offers users more choice in integrated Work Item Tracking solutions. Vault Pro includes integration with Axosoft OnTime defects. It also ships with a tightly-integrated, complete Work Item Tracking solution from SourceGear – the original Fortress Bug Tracking solution -- which will continue to be fully supported and developed by SourceGear.

Vault Pro 5.1 and Vault Standard 5.1 also have several bug fixes, additional polish, and the many minor enhancements customers have come to expect from SourceGear’s point releases. For additional details, please read over the Vault Pro 5.1 release notes and Vault Standard 5.1 release notes.

Why the change? I liked Fortress the way it was.

So did we. But we believe this change will make it clear that Vault Standard and Vault Professional are part of the same family, and both built on the same rock-solid Version Control technology. They are still two separate products, Vault Standard exists as a source code control only tool and Vault Professional exists as a source code control tool with integrated bug tracking options.

We also believe the Vault Professional name will help communicate that the product offers enhancements that can make your life a lot easier -- including always knowing what Work Item a checkin relates to (and vice-versa), the ability to create and save custom queries, integration with CruiseControl.NET to provide continuous integration and build support, and a lot more.

With the price change, we’re trying to make it easier for customers to make the move to Vault Pro, and take advantage of the many efficiencies that come with integrated Work Item tracking and Build Integration.

Finally, we’re also tremendously excited to be partnering with Axosoft. We think their Project Management Solution is cool, and so do their thousands of customers.

Where can I download the new product?

Will I need a new license key when transitioning from Fortress to Vault Pro?

Only if you are upgrading from Fortress 1.x. All version 2.x Fortress license keys will work on a Vault Pro Server.

Why did the version of the product advance from 2.x to 5.1?

Vault Standard is a mature version control tool; accordingly Vault Professional is as well and now co-exists under the same version number.

Vault Standard is the core of Vault Professional; it contains all of the same great version control features found in Vault standard, with the addition of integrated work item tracking features.

Are there any new costs associated with Vault Professional?

You will likely find the new price list for Vault Pro in your favor. We have lowered the cost of each single user license key from $599 to $449. The price of annual maintenance has also decreased from $120 per licensed user to $90. Web-only licenses are still available and now retail for $169 per user. Annual maintenance for web-only licenses is now $34 per user. For additional pricing information and volume discounts, please visit our pricing page.

Do I have to upgrade?

We will continue to provide technical support to customers who decide to remain on Fortress 1.x and 2.x.

Can a Vault Pro Client connect to a Fortress Server?

Yes. A Vault Pro 5.1 Client can connect to a Fortress 2.x Server. However, additional configuration is needed so the client can access Fortress’s work items. Please contact our technical support department for additional details.

Are Vault Pro licenses compatible with a Fortress Server?

Yes. If you need to purchase additional license keys but have not yet upgraded from Fortress to Vault Pro, you can purchase Vault Pro license keys and they will work accordingly.

Do I have to upgrade all of our Fortress users and server at once?

No. You can selectively upgrade your Fortress 2.x Clients to Vault Pro without initially upgrading the Vault Pro Server or vice versa.

Do you have any Fortress t-shirts left? Those have to be collector’s items!

Not in your size. Sorry.
